Integrative & Alternative Medicine

What is integrative medicine?

One of the key principles of integrative medicine is to treat each patient as a whole person. This means that Dr. Collin takes the time to learn how your emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and physical issues contribute to your health problems.

By learning about all the factors that contribute to your symptoms, and determining whether you have nutritional, biochemical, and hormonal imbalances, Dr. Collin can create a comprehensive treatment plan that solves each problem rather than simply treating a symptom.

For example, you can take over-the-counter medications to relieve a recurring headache. But if your headache is triggered by something in your diet, ongoing stress, or a chronic sinus infection, you’ll keep having headaches because pain relievers treat the symptom, not the real cause of the problem. With integrative medicine, all the underlying issues are treated.

Another key component of integrative medicine is the type of treatment you receive. Dr. Collin combines the best of both worlds, offering conventional medical treatments together with alternative medicine. He chooses the treatments from both fields that are best for each patient.

What is alternative medicine?

Alternative medicine embraces a broad range of treatments other than conventional therapies like prescription medications.

These are only a few examples of  alternative treatment options:

  • Change in diet (especially for food allergies)
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Intravenous (IV) nutrient infusion
  • Herbal medicine
  • Homeopathic treatments
  • Vitamin and mineral supplementation

Other types of alternative treatment include low dose naltrexone (LDN), a medication support for autoimmune disease and chronic pain.

What conditions are treated with integrative and alternative medicine?

Integrative and alternative medicine can treat virtually every type of health condition, including:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Mold and yeast toxicity
  • Cancer recovery
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Allergy disorders
  • Arthritis
  • Skin disease
  • Mental health disorders

Dr. Collin frequently uses alternative medicine for anti-aging treatments.

What is low-dose naltrexone (LDN)?

Naltrexone is a medication that’s used at a full dose to help patients overcome alcohol or opioid addictions. When it’s administered at a low dose, however, it has a different therapeutic effect.

LDN causes three responses in your body:

  • Increases levels of endorphins
  • Boosts your immune system
  • Reduces inflammation

Endorphins are naturally produced in your body, where they relieve pain, improve your mood, and reduce stress. Dr. Collin may recommend LDN to treat autoimmune illness. LDN also has the potential to relieve chronic pain.

Dr. Collin has practiced the whole-person, integrative approach for years. To learn more about the benefits of personalized medicine, call Jonathan Collin, MD.
